The Olympics Are Over (Now What?)

I just finished watching the final competitions and the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games! What an awesome few weeks of competition, inspiration, and sportsmanship.

As I've been watching, I've done so through the lens of a Personal Trainer and Strength Coach, so that I can lend insight here and improve the experience for my clients.

With that in mind, here are 3 observations from today:

The Importance of Lateral Movement

Watching table tennis reminded me of the importance of lateral movement. While these athletes might not possess the same musculature as those in more physically imposing sports, their strength, agility, and endurance across all 3 planes of motion—sagittal, frontal, and transverse—are essential.

Many athletes focus primarily on sagittal plan movements, which can lead to imbalances. So, incorporating exercises that address all 3 planes in our own training can help prevent these imbalances, promote more well-rounded fitness programming, and guide us to more sustainable results.

The Art of Rest & Recovery

The Olympic athletes’ packed competition schedules highlight the importance of rest and recovery. Consider the swimmers who race multiple events in 1 day, or the soccer teams playing 6 games in just 2 weeks, or the heptathletes completing 7 events over 2 days.

These athletes rely heavily on their coaches for recovery support, but they also take personal responsibility for staying hydrated, prioritizing sleep, and performing prehabilitation exercises.

While we might not face the same intense demands, the principles are the same: prioritizing recovery is key to avoiding injury and maintaining long-term performance, no matter what our own "competitions" might be.

The Power of Community

The Olympics also highlight the importance of community support. Athletes are rarely alone—whether they're interacting with teammates, competitors, coaches, or even fans, they have a strong support system.

The displays of sportsmanship and camaraderie we see are a powerful reminder of the human spirit and our need for connection.

In our own fitness journeys, building and maintaining a supportive community is crucial for sustaining our physical, mental, and emotional endurance.

We may not be on the global stage, but the encouragement and support of others can make all the difference.
